Wood Working Hardware Pieces of Equipment

The matter of wood working is the process of building, making, or carving something that is made out of wood. There are many different topics included in wood working, which includes that of: carpentry, joinery, cabinetry, marquetry, parquetry, turning, wood species, carving, boat building, luthier, wheelwright, cooper, bodger, and patternmaker. Each of these factors, whether they are classified as being special techniques or that of a specialized product, have great importance and are completely pertinent to wood working.

The Basic Pieces of Wood Working Hardware

While there are a variety of tools that are actually considered as wood working hardware tools, there are a few basic pieces of wood working hardware that are more commonly used than others. This includes such things as: rulers, tape measures, protractors, straightedges, combination squares, try squares, scratch awls, marking gauges, marking knives, levels, plane gauges, hygrometers, winding sticks, hand saws (crosscut saw, rip saw, various backsaws, coping saw, keyhole saw, bow saw, and various other Japanese saws).

Other tools in this category include power saws (circular saw, chainsaw, table saw, radial arm saw, jigsaw, miter saw, hole saw, and band saw), hand planes (jointer plane, smoothing plane, block plane, shoulder plane, scrub plane, spear plane, and rabbet plane), thickness planer and jointer, router and router bits, rotary tools, chisel and gouge, lathe, drill press, rasp, knife, and other hand shaping tools (axe, adze, froe, spokeshave, and drawknife).

As for the less basic but just as important pieces of wood working hardware, this includes such things as: sandpaper, steel or bronze wool, file, scraper, brushes, spray guns for applying lacquer, workbench, dog hole, bench dog, hold fast, vice, bench hook, sawhorse, horse, shooting board, diamond plate, grinder, saw set, sharpening jig, waterstone, whetstone or oil stone.

A chisel is one of the most commonly used pieces of handheld wood working hardware; it is a tool which has a cutting edge on one of its ends, which is designed specifically for carving or cutting a hard material such as wood with. A gouge is actually a particular type of chisel, which is used particularly in that of wood working and sculpture.

Another extremely common handheld wood working tool is the vise, which is a mechanical screw apparatus that is used to holding a work piece securely in place, while it is being worked on. This frees up the worker¡¯s hands, so that they can work properly on the piece. In general, vises usually have a fixed jaw with another moved in relation to it by the use of the screw set in the vise itself.
