A Wood Working Lathe: The Uses and Where to Find Them

What is a Wood Working Lathe?

A wood working lathe is a tool which is a form of machine that spins a block of material so that when any abrasion, cutting, or deformation is applied to the block, it can then be shaped to produce an object which will have symmetry about an axis of rotation. Lathes are an essential tool in wood working, and these wood working lathes are the oldest variety of all lathes. With the wood working lathe, an adjustable horizontal metal rail which is between the material and the operator accommodates the positioning of shaping tools, which are usually otherwise handheld.

Many projects will require you to turn a spindle or other cylindrical feature for example, and a lathe is the tool that you need for this type of task. A lathe allows you to turn various parts of wood into many different forms and shapes.

Another aspect of turning on a wood lathe that makes it so appealing is that of the creative spirit which it offers. This is because while most the types of wood working require that you make things to a perfect and exact size, the act of turning is much different in this way; when you are turning, you are actually sculpting the shape freehand while the part is rotating.

Most of the larger sizes of lathes are provided and equipped with a power-feeding carriage, and it is the cone-pulley arrangement which provides power from the motor, and trackways are then cast to the inside of the bed for sliding the carriage back and forth. All of the lathe machines have a metal bar that can be attached and then obviously de-attached to the bed of the lathe between the operator and the work.

This metal bar serves as a hand rest and also provides much needed support for the operator in guiding tools along the work. In lather work, the wood is rotated against the special cutting tools, and these tools include such things as: turning gouges, skew chisels, parting tools, round-nose, square-nose, and spear-point.

Where you can buy a Wood working Lathe?

You can find a wood working lathe at basically any wood working store, as they are one of the most common and essential types out of all wood working tools. Searching on the Internet is obviously the best idea, as you can browse through a multitude of online stores easily, efficiently, and quickly.
